A Lake Wedding

This past weekend we ventured to Lake Gaston for my cousin's wedding at their lake house.
Despite the rainy weather, the wedding was beautiful and the rain didn't stop the party.

So many lake-inspired details were worked into the wedding and it set a perfect atmosphere.
Leading the way to the house were signs painted on skis, oars were waiting to be signed as you walked up to the house, guests were sat on the deck, pontoon boats, the beach and a neighboring deck, and a bar was set up in a canoe by the back deck.

The weather held out until late enough in the evening that everyone enjoyed dancing in the rain.
Alli beamed the entire night, and by the time things wrapped up both her parents had done keg stands.

My phone was dead most of the night, but I did manage to grab some rainy iphone pictures.

Five on Friday

Hi, everyone!  One week I'll actually have the brainpower to come up with a category to use for Five on Friday, but today it's another dump of what's been on my mind recently.  The weekend is too close to utilize more thinking skills than that.

{One.}
I have mixed feelings about the iOS 7 update.  I decided to go for it when my sister texted me and said "Are you going to get the new software update? I feel like I have to inform you because you're too old to be in the loop".  Too old? I have twitter, thank you.  When I first saw how different it looked I felt like it was an impostor, like I was using a generic iphone.  I do like the camera, itunes radio, flashlight easily at your fingertips and some other cool features, but some of my apps don't work quite right.

{Two}
I'm tackling one of the things on my 30x30 list by taking a ballet class.  It meets on Tuesday nights from 8:30-9:30 and although my little eyes are tired by the time I get home past my pathetic bedtime, I'm really loving it so far.  It's very technique focused and I'm terrible right now after a) not having taken dance in 10 years and b) not having a very technique focused class when I did take ballet, but after just 2 weeks I can already tell I'm improving.  Bonus it's great for toning-my calves and thighs are so sore the next day.  Drawback: It really hurts the self-esteem to put on a leotard these days...

{Three}
The last time I posted for Five on Friday I shared Tulsa Goldie's instagram, and today I have another adorable dog for you to add to your follow list-Finn Seyfriend (Amanda Seyfried's dog).  He is great at balancing items on his head including (but not limited to) a cheeseburger, a flower pot and a chicken.  Plus, she has a habit of dressing him up in funny costumes, complete with wigs.  Follow this adorableness @mingey.

{Four}
I went shopping with my mom and sister recently and thoroughly embarrassed them by inquiring about discounts everywhere we went.  But hey, there were many out there to be had.  I got a student discount at Madewell, a school employee discount at Loft and JCrew and a AAA discount at Banana Republic and New York and Company.  Score.  Made it possible to come home with all of this loot and still eat for the rest of the month.

{Five}
Since every post could use multiple pictures of dogs, I was at the vet for one of Linus' many appointments recently when a woman walked in with this beast.  Lady, that's a horse.  This little dog that had been yapping the whole time I was there cowered and shut up with this dog walked in the place.

This or That

I've been in a real lazy mood recently since being sick earlier in the week so when Whitney posted these prompts it seemed like a no brainer to join the link up.  Copy, paste and respond-done.  In her font and all because changing that would be too much effort.

Vacationing in Florida or vacationing in NYC: NYC.  I get enough of the heat and humidity in good ole NC, so some cool air would be a good change of pace.

iPhone or Droid: iPhone, duh.  I feel like people that claim to prefer Droids are lying.  Either their provider doesn't carry the iPhone (are there still cell places like that?) or they think it's cool to be different.

NSYNC or Backstreet Boys: NSYNC.  I mean, they produced Justin Timberlake.

Being forced to delete Facebook or being forced to delete Twitter: Tough one.  I definitely like Twitter better, but how would I stalk people I once knew but have no desire to see in real life again?

Fireball or Miller Lite: Mmm...I'm not positive I've tried either.  Can I have a Blue Moon with a shot of Southern Comfort?

Full House or Family Matters: Obviously Full House.  I was at work one day last year and a kid asked what Full House was.  He ate his lunch in the classroom that day and was introduced to one of the best shows of our time.

Dumbledore or Gandalf: I'm not completely sure what these words mean... Judging from Whitney's answer Dumbledore is from Harry Potter....There's an episode of Friends where they call this guy Gandalf "because he's a wizard", so wizards sound pretty cool I guess. We'll call it a draw.

Dying Easter eggs or Carving pumpkins: Carving pumpkins.  I have no patience to dye eggs anything other than solid colors, and that's only but so entertaining.

NFL or NCAAF: I'm a child of the South, we watch college sports.  We prefer to cheer for mediocre teams, what can I say?

A hangover forever or sobriety forever: I could not live with a hangover forever.

January or July: I have summers off, so July for sure.

Hannah Montana or Miley Cyrus: Ohhh I don't know, they're both pretty bad.  I guess the Miley train wreck is mildly entertaining.

Shark Week or Fashion Week: Shark bait, woohaha.  In college Dan and his roommates were obsessed with Shark Week.  We definitely own some on DVD.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air or Saved by the Bell: I'm going to have to say Saved by the Bell.  I mean, what other show led you to believe you'd spend most of your high school years hanging out at hamburger joint?  I was legitimately shocked my high school schedule didn't include all these free periods I'd been raised to believe it would.  I had this huge old cell phone in high school and a friend of mine used to leave me voicemails saying "Hi this is Zach Morris calling Kelli Kapowski, want to go to the Max?"

Britney or Christina: Hit me baby, one more time.

Burrito or Burrito Bowl: I've only eaten at Chipotle once in my life (the horror, I know), but the closest one to me is about 1 1/2 hours away.  I got the burrito but everyone's bowl looked so good to me that's what I'll try the next time.

Reading blogs on your phone or reading blogs on your computer: iPad for the win.  Although I do prefer computer b/c it's easier to comment than the struggle I go through with the BlogLovin' app.  I just normally read blogs when I'm not at home and iPad is more portable.

Angelina or Jennifer: How is this even a comparison?  Jennifer, obviously.  I would love to hang out with her, Chelsea and Reese.  I think we'd have a great time.  And she doesn't smooch her brother.

Doug Funny or The Rugrats: This is a really tough one, but I think I'd have to go Doug.  The Doug and Patty Mayonnaise love story is one for the ages, people.

An open mouth chewer or a heavy breather: Heavy breather. Every time I see someone chewing with their mouth open I think back to my mom drilling that in our heads as young children and think wow, their mom has failed them.  Maybe that's harsh judgment, but either way I feel a strong urge to leave the room.

And because every post needs a picture, here's my dad in DC this week pretending to be a former Braves player and posing with a fan in a bar that wanted their picture with a legend.

E-C-U

This past weekend I experienced my first ECU game.
I've been to a few tailgates but never actually had a ticket to the game, so when my friend June said she had some extra I was ready to see what it was all about.

We started the weekend by checking out Freeboot Fridays, something our town does the nights before home games where local vendors have food and beer, there are games for kids, free trolley rides and a band.
This week the band was a Beatles cover band and with a Shock Top Pumpkin Wheat in hand they did not disappoint.
My brother stayed with us and we saw him and all his friends as well as my aunt and uncle and some of Dan's friends and it was a beautiful night to be outside with good company.

My friend from grad school, June, is always hosting the the cutest shindigs and Saturday's tailgate was no exception.
We had a great spread of omelette bites, shrimp, muffins, cinnamon rolls, chips and dip, screwdrivers and spiked coffee before heading into the stadium.
After the game we all headed to our house to watch Alabama and Texas A&M, grill some great food and play Yahtzee and Jenga for as long as our eyes would stay open.
It was so great to have friends in town and we always enjoy the time we get to spend with this group.

S'mores Cookies

I've made these delicious and very easy to make cookies twice in the past couple of weeks and everyone has loved them.

Preheat oven to 375 and place parchment paper over a baking sheet.
Break graham crackers in half and cover the baking sheet with them.

In a medium bowl combine:
2 1/2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon

In a blender cream:
11 tablespoons unsalted butter
1/2 cup granulated sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar

Then add to blender:
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla

Start little by little adding the flour mixture.  When everything is mixed stir in 1/2 semi-sweet chocolate chips and 1 cup marshmallows.
Place the mixture just as you would with cookies, but over the graham crackers.
Bake until halfway finished (about 7 minutes) then push down 1 square of a Hershey bar in the middle of each cookie. Finish baking.

The cinnamon adds a nice touch to these cookies-it's not a powerful taste, not even enough that you could put your finger on what it was if you hadn't seen the recipe, but enough that it's different from regular chocolate chip cookies with marshmallows added in.

Work is picking up and I've got a few busy weeks ahead, so I'm hoping to stay focused and make these weeks count!

This week I hope to:

1.  Send out invitations to my friend's baby shower
2.  Post three times.
3.  Morning workouts 4 days.
4.  Get the house cleaned and ready for company over the weekend.

Five on Friday

{One}
This poor guy had surgery to remove a kidney stone on Tuesday and has to be separated from other animals for 10-14 days.  The night he stayed over at the vet Lucy kept looking in all his normal hiding places for him and running up to us concerned.  Right when we brought him home we let them see each other briefly and she ran straight to him, sniffed his incision and went to work giving him kisses all over his head and face.  He just reached his face up to her and purred as he let her lick him.  It's so amazing how attached pets get to each other and how loving they can be towards one another.  Lucy has spent most of the rest of the week laying outside the door of the room Linus is in and whining.

{Two}
Greenville recently got a Which Wich and Dan and I have become obsessed.  You go in, pick the bag of what sub you want, check off what toppings you want on your sub and hand it to them to make.  They give you your sub in the bag at the end of the line.  Genius.  Why have no other sub place learned to cater to us anti-social people of the world?  Plus they have topping options that other sub places don't-my favorites are the sauteed onions and balsamic vinegar.

{Three}
Dan's family came over for dinner Saturday night and we made a blueberry blue cheese dip my friend Ashley introduced me to for an appetizer.  It's blue cheese, blueberries, green onion, cream cheese and garlic.  Such an odd combination that is so delicious.  She's posted the recipe here.

{Four}
September is the time of year where the rest of the internet world brags about their fall obsessions while us Southerners sweat in the 90 degree heat and wish we could trade in our sundresses for scarves and boots.  However, I did run across some pumpkin yogurt covered pretzels at Fresh Market over the weekend and they are heaven in my mouth.  Something great to go with the iced version of the pumpkin spice latte we're drinking around these parts.

{Five}
You need to be following tulsagoldie on instagram.  She's the most adorable thing to ever happen to football.  I mean, really?  This makes me want to go out and buy a golden retriever friend for Lucy and Linus.  I guess they'll just have to settle with visiting with my brother's new puppy, Riley.
