Pete

Donald Johnson "Pete" Mathews
October 3, 1928-May 16, 2011

"In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going."

I've debated on writing this post, but finally decided Pete was a regular reader of my blog and deserved his own post.  We called him Pete the same as all his friends did because he always said a grandfather was an old person.  We all, Pete included, thought he was invinsible.  He'd had heart attacks, 9 bypasses (5 all at once) and seemed to live pretty well with only about 20% usage of his heart.  He shot 82 in golf the week before he died.  It was only fitting to have a coffin covered in flowers with tees and golf balls, a golf club inside and a golf flag beside it and to have his dogs included in his obituary.  Everywhere I've been recently-the vet, the grocery store, the doctor, etc. someone has told me how sorry they were to hear about him, a great representation of his life.

He did love some Whitmans.

I love beach music...

One more thing to cross off the list-my dad sent in the contract and deposit for the band today...The Embers!  Every Sunday my parents play Sunday on the Beach allll day long, which used to drive us crazy when we were younger, but now we have to admit we get the appeal.  My mom dances around the kitchen and I'm sure we've all spent many hours as babies being carried around while she shagged through the house.  Dan didn't know how to shag and a couple of years ago we took a beginner's class in Raleigh that was so much fun we went back for the intermediate class, and after moving to Greenville found classes here too.  With him being in Kentucky we've gotten a little rusty, but we're excited to start going to the City Hotel & Bistro on Sunday nights for more shagging when he moves back so we can be ready for our wedding!
